SUMMER BOOK REVIEW

I guess that this officially makes this one of those unfocused blogs about pretty much anything and everything; however, after a long summer of travel ( beaches, planes, trains and automobiles) I've read a small library of books. Admittedly a lot of the books I started over the summer I just could not suffer through and abandoned. There are also a lot of books not worth mentioning that I suffered to the end the very end only to be disappointed.

Here are a couple of books that I found memorable enough to be worth discussing

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS - By Sara Gruen

At first I couldn't figure out why I like the writing style of this book so much while reading it, I only knew i really liked it. It wasn't until I was finished that I noticed a one sentence book review on the jacket that compared the authors style to that of Robertson Davies that it all made sense (Davies was my favourite author all through my teens) Overall I found this novel to be engaging, heart breaking at times and also full of dry humour.

-A fantasy mix with just the right amount of reality.

I recently just found out that they are currently making a Hollywood movie version of this book and have casted Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattenson for the leads. I have to say that i'm already very disappointed with this, I like Reese but I think she's all wrong for this role ( she comes off as too strong to me to play this character they need someone a little meeker) and R-Pratz!? ...really!? is that a joke? ..oh well one can only wait and see...


DISMANTLED -By Jennifer McMahoh

This was my summer surprise read. I was expecting a Teen "fluff" novel since it was loaned to me by my 13 year old niece.

Young Adult novel it was not.

Exactly what this novel was I'm still really not sure. It follows the typical plot line of a "thriller" where everything leads up to the typical moment in which all is revealed and then the main character(s) have to fight between life and death. Whats different about this book is not the plot, it's how it gets there. The details of the story and the process in which it unfolded to the reader makes is very unique. The characters and setting are well developed and the whole novel somehow becomes very visual without being overly descriptive.

- Very strange book...but in a good way.


My Summer "Super Fluff" read

I think that everyone who reads need fun "super fluff" to read; something that will keep your attention ( even when your dead tired) and help you escape reality for a little bit.

My favourite "fluff' used to be poorly written horror novels, now I prefer young adult fiction that comes recommended by my 13 year old niece. A lot of the novels she tells me about are quite inventive ( not the Sweet Valley High novels the Tweens read in my day) not to mention that the quality of the writing in my fav. fluff reads has gone up considerably since i switched from the likes of D.R koonz to the teen novels.

2 series I ripped through this summer and enjoyed ever minute of were:

The Pretty series- By Scott Westerfeld

-Totally amazingly original and I think they would make a awesome CGI (Avitar style) movie.

&

The City of Bones series- By Cassandra Clare

- Just plain fun and I find myself excited for the next book to be released.
